Looking at the footage, another thing that makes me think the regime can't depend upon the army is the relative ineffectiveness of the suppression of the protests. Not that this is anything light or anything other than terrifying and disgusting. But look at how ill equipped the Basiji militia is:


This is not Tiananmen. This is not that bloody, merciless elimination of opposition where thousands died. And I've no doubt that Khamenei would order that if he could.
